Convert square feet, square metres, acres and more
Square feet, square metres, square yards, acres and hectares have fixed international definitions, so these conversions are exact everywhere (1 foot = 0.3048 m, so 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 sq m; 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft; see NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C). Commercial property in India is usually let and sold by the square foot, industrial plots are allotted in square metres, and land is registered in hectares or acres. Use this table to check a figure quickly.

Indian land area converter
Traditional land units such as bigha, biswa, katha, kanal and marla were set by local revenue practice, so the same name can mean different areas in different states, and sometimes in different districts of one state. That is why the converter asks for your region. Each value below says how firm it is:
- Fixed value the unit is defined the same way wherever it is used.
- Usual local value the value generally used in that state's land records and transactions.
- Varies by district the value differs noticeably within the state; the figure shown is the most widely cited one, so treat results as approximate.

Maharashtra's 7/12 records area in hectare – are (R) – sq m; land is also traded in guntha and acres. R means are (100 sq m), not guntha.

Madhya Pradesh land records use hectares. The local bigha has no single reliable value, so it is not converted here.
Not listed: the bigha. Figures of 12,000 sq ft and 27,225 sq ft are both quoted for Madhya Pradesh, but no official source confirms either. Ask for the area in hectares from the khasra or B-1 record.
Uttar PradeshBigha (pucca), Biswa (pucca), Biswansi (pucca)
The standard (pucca) bigha is 3,025 sq yd. In parts of western Uttar Pradesh a kachcha bigha of a third or a quarter of that is used.

Land in Gujarat is bought in vigha, guntha and acres, recorded on the 7/12 extract in hectare, are and square metres, and urban plots are usually sold by the square yard (var). A guntha is fixed at 1/40 acre (1,089 sq ft). The vigha is not fixed: in Saurashtra and in most conversion tables it is 16 guntha (17,424 sq ft, so 2.5 vigha make an acre), while in areas of the former Baroda (Gaekwad) State it is about 23.5 guntha (1.7 vigha to an acre).
